National Museum of the Royal Navy, Naval museum in Portsmouth, England

The National Museum of the Royal Navy is a naval museum within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, an active naval base on England's southern coast. Its collection spans over 350 years of British naval history, with original ships, uniforms, weapons, figureheads, flags, and personal objects from sailors and officers.

Portsmouth has served as a base for the Royal Navy for centuries, and the dockyard itself dates back to the 16th century. The museum grew around the historic ships moored there, with HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, becoming the centerpiece of the collection.

The last entry is at 3:30 in the afternoon, so arriving early makes it easier to see everything without rushing. Some of the ships have steep stairs and low ceilings, so sturdy shoes are a good idea, and wheelchair access is available on certain vessels.

One section called Hear My Story lets visitors listen to personal accounts from over 1,000 people connected to the Navy, covering around 100 years of lived experience. Among the objects on display, a small knitted figure named Ernie was carried by a sailor through wartime submarine patrols as a good luck charm.
