New Broadcasting House, Broadcasting headquarters on Oxford Road, Manchester, United Kingdom.
New Broadcasting House is a six-floor concrete structure on Oxford Road in Manchester with bronze-tinted solar glass panels and about 30,000 square meters of space. The building contained multiple broadcasting studios, offices for different BBC departments, and a separate television studio located behind the main office block.
Designed by the BBC's own architectural team, this regional headquarters opened in 1975 and operated for about 35 years. It closed when broadcasting operations moved to a new facility at MediaCityUK in 2011.
The building served as home to BBC Manchester, BBC North West, and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. These departments made it a significant broadcasting center where radio and television programs reached audiences across the region.
The building sits on Oxford Road in Chorlton-on-Medlock and was designed to accommodate about 800 staff members. Different departments were spread across various floors, with Radio Manchester occupying the upper ground floor.
The foundation system used 214 bored piles to support the building's concrete weight. This engineering approach allowed the structure to stand steadily on the site despite its size and heavy construction.
