Morgan's Mount, Historic watchtower on city walls in Chester, England.
Morgan's Mount is a rectangular watchtower built from red sandstone that rises from Chester's city walls on the north side. The structure features barred openings and a roof-level platform designed for observation and defense of the surrounding area.
The watchtower was built in 1645 during the English Civil War to serve as an observation and gun emplacement for the city's defense. Parliamentary forces later damaged the structure and removed its cannon after the city's defeat.
The structure exemplifies medieval military engineering through its strategic design, featuring an L-shaped stone bench at roof level for monitoring the surrounding landscape.
Access to the observation platform requires climbing two sets of five stone steps built into the structure. From the top, visitors can see across Chester's northern districts and toward the Welsh hills on clear days.
One step in the staircase is made from a Victorian gravestone that was repurposed during repairs. This unusual detail shows how practical builders were when maintaining the structure over time.
