Octagon Theatre, Theatre in Bolton, England
The Octagon Theatre is a theatre on Washington Street in the town centre of Bolton, England, housed in a purpose-built structure. Its main auditorium has adaptable seating that can be reconfigured for different productions, and the building also contains a bar and kitchen area.
The theatre opened in 1967 and was the first purpose-built professional theatre constructed in the North West of England after World War II. Princess Margaret attended the official opening ceremony.
The Octagon Theatre is known for its flexible staging, which can place the audience on different sides of the stage depending on the production. This means every show feels physically different, and regular visitors often choose seats in a new position each time.
The theatre is in the centre of Bolton, within walking distance of the main bus and rail connections in the town. Arriving a little early is a good idea, as the on-site bar and kitchen give a relaxed place to wait before the show begins.
Freddie Mercury performed at this venue early in his career, before he became widely known. Fans sometimes visit just to stand in the same space where he once played.
