Panmure Testimonial, Historic monument near Monikie, Scotland.
Panmure Testimonial is a 105-foot tall monument featuring an octagonal base, arched buttresses, and a circular fluted column topped with a stone urn. The structure sits atop Camustone Hill and is reached through a tree-lined avenue.
Built in 1839, the monument honors William Maule, 2nd Earl of Panmure, who suspended rent collection during food shortages in 1826. His compassion during a time of scarcity left a lasting impression on the local community.
Local tenant farmers funded this monument as an expression of gratitude toward Lord Panmure, who supported them through economic hardship. The structure shows how agricultural workers chose to express their appreciation through an enduring building.
Access is via a tree-lined avenue extending from the former location of Panmure House, which leads up to the hilltop site. The area is walkable and the surroundings offer views across the Angus countryside.
Architect John Henderson designed this rare example where agricultural workers immortalized their landowner through architecture. The column and pedestal design stands apart from monuments typically raised by officials or the aristocracy.
