Oldbury rock shelters, Archaeological rock shelter site in Ightham, Kent, England.
The Oldbury complex consists of natural rock formations and caves along the slopes of Oldbury Hill, featuring multiple stone overhangs and protective spaces.
Neanderthals occupied these shelters approximately 50,000 years ago, leaving behind numerous Mousterian flint tools and bout-coupé handaxes discovered through excavations.
The site contains evidence of early human manufacturing processes, demonstrated by the collection of stone implements and waste flakes from tool production.
Access to the rock shelters requires following designated paths through woodland areas, with visitors recommended to use GPS coordinates for accurate navigation.
Natural erosion of greenstone rocks created these shelters when softer sandstone eroded underneath, forming spaces large enough for human habitation.
