Quartermile, Mixed-use development in Lauriston, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Quartermile is a mixed-use development in Lauriston with residential towers, office buildings, shops, and public green spaces spread across about 8 hectares. The site blends preserved Victorian structures with contemporary construction and creates a connection between the city center and the nearby Meadows parkland.
The site served as Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, a major hospital, until 2001 when the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust sold it for redevelopment. Over the following years, the former medical facility was transformed into a residential and office complex.
The nine Victorian structures shape how this place looks today and remind visitors of its former use as a hospital. You can see how the old buildings blend with newer additions throughout the site.
The site sits conveniently between the city center and Meadows Park, with multiple paths to explore the grounds. There is underground parking available and good public transport connections, while the public areas are easy to access on foot.
The name refers to the exact distance of about 400 meters between this site and both Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. This central positioning between two of the city's most famous landmarks inspired the chosen name.
