Rannoch Barracks, Military barracks in Bridge of Gaur, Scotland
Rannoch Barracks is a military structure positioned at the western end of Loch Rannoch in the Scottish Highlands. The main building stands in a landscape shaped by mountains and moorland.
The establishment was founded in 1746 after the Jacobite uprising to enforce control over remote Highland regions. Between 1798 and 1803 the main building underwent transformation and began serving different purposes.
The site became a focal point for local settlement after the Jacobite defeat, as discharged soldiers and displaced crofters made homes in the area. This shaped how Kinloch Rannoch developed and how Highland communities were rebuilt.
The location sits in a rural and mountainous area best visited during warmer months. Access comes via narrow roads through the Highlands, so allow extra time for travel.
Evangelist Dugald Buchanan drove agricultural improvements near the barracks and introduced new crops to the area. His initiatives including mill construction helped modernize the local economy.
