Llyn Brianne, Reservoir in Ceredigion, Wales.
Llyn Brianne is a reservoir in Ceredigion, Wales, sitting at 350 meters above sea level and holding 64 million cubic meters of water behind a 91-meter stone dam. The basin is surrounded by rolling hills and forested areas managed by the conservation authority.
The reservoir was constructed in the late 1960s by Wimpey Construction to regulate water flow and provide drinking water for communities in South Wales. Its creation involved flooding an entire valley and displacing the people and farms that once lived there.
The flooded valley contains submerged farmhouses, including Fannog, which emerge from the water during dry periods and show how the landscape was once inhabited.
Two car parks at the southern end provide access to walking trails and viewing points around the water. Toilet facilities are located near the forestry area and make longer visits more comfortable.
The dam was once the highest in Britain and includes an integrated hydroelectric power station that generates electricity. This combination of water storage and power generation made it a notable engineering achievement when it was built.
