Rufforth Circuit, Racing circuit in York, England
Rufforth Circuit was a racing track west of York built on a former military airfield site, stretching about 2.7 kilometers in length. The layout combined technical sections that demanded skill with high-speed straights where drivers could push for maximum performance.
The circuit opened in 1959 on the grounds of RAF Rufforth, a World War II bomber base that had stopped operations in 1954. It remained active as a racing venue for nearly two decades before closing in 1977.
The location drew racing enthusiasts and competitors from across the country who gathered to watch and participate in motor sports events. The races shaped how people in the region viewed this site as a hub for serious drivers during that era.
The site sits west of York near the B1224 road, though the track itself has remained closed to visitors since operations ended. You can view the location from nearby areas, but access to the grounds is not permitted.
Early in its operation, the track was significantly shortened in 1960, going from over 3.4 kilometers down to 2.7 kilometers in length. The redesign still preserved the challenging character that made it interesting for competitive drivers.
