Risinghoe Castle, Medieval fortress ruins in Bedford, England
Risinghoe Castle is a medieval fortress site marked by a distinctive circular earthen mound located near Bedford. The structure features steep sides and a flattened top, representing what remains of the original defensive work.
The fortress was built in the early 1100s as a military response to the conflicts of the era. It formed part of the network of defenses constructed during the political turbulence of that period.
The mound contains traces of its past through medieval pottery fragments scattered across the site. These discoveries show that people lived and worked here for generations.
The mound is best viewed from the nearby A428 road as it sits on private land with limited public access. Visitors can appreciate the site from a distance along Goldington Road without entering the property.
Industrial activity in the 1800s dramatically altered the site's original form when the secondary mound was removed through clay extraction. Only the main earthwork survived this process, leaving a different silhouette than the fortress once had.
