Mowsbury Hill

Mowsbury Hill is an Iron Age hillfort near Bedford with well-preserved defensive earthworks and multiple landscape features. The reserve includes traces of a medieval manor site, ponds, and meadow areas that visitors can explore.

The site began as an Iron Age settlement with defensive structures to protect its inhabitants. Later, during medieval times, the location was reused for a manor house surrounded by a moat.

The site offers insight into how different communities used and defended this land across centuries. Visitors can observe both the ancient ramparts and the traces of medieval occupation.

Access is best from the Mowsbury Golf Course car park on Cleat Hill, where marked trails guide you through the site. The paths are easy to follow and lead through different areas of interest.

Pottery fragments discovered here reveal details about daily life in the Iron Age settlement. The layering of two different periods of construction makes this location particularly valuable for understanding settlement patterns over time.
