Saltburn Miniature Railway, Miniature railway in Saltburn, England
Saltburn Miniature Railway is a small-gauge railway that runs half a mile from Cat Nab Station near the beach to Forest Halt through wooded gardens. The track system uses 15-inch gauge rails with run-around loops at each end and an engine depot in the middle, allowing trains to be turned around for the return journey.
The line opened in 1947 using simple freight wagons to carry passengers before upgrading to proper coaches with reversible seats the following year. This humble beginning established the foundation for what would become a enduring attraction on the coast.
The railway is run by enthusiasts who have kept the line operating for generations of visitors. The locomotives become familiar sights to regular guests who return year after year.
The railway sits close to the beach and is easily reached on foot from Saltburn town center. Visitors should expect cozy seating in small carriages and wear comfortable clothing, as the journey takes place outdoors.
Since 1953, the railway has used a clever passing system where one train backs into a siding to allow another to pass on the single track. This ingenious solution lets two trains operate at the same time on what might otherwise be a very limited route.
