Saltcoats Castle, 16th century castle in Gullane, Scotland

Saltcoats Castle is a 16th century castle south of Gullane in East Lothian featuring two five-story towers with curved bases that shift to square forms higher up. The two towers are linked by a large arch, and the grounds contain remains of former gardens, an orchard, and a bowling green from earlier centuries.

Patrick Livingstone began construction in 1592, establishing a stronghold for his family in this region. The structure remained home to inhabitants for over 2 centuries until partial demolition around 1820 left it as a ruin.

The castle served as a symbol of status for the Livingstone family, with surviving gardens and a dovecot showing ties to rural life and land ownership. Its design with Scottish crow-stepped gables and defensive towers reflects how wealthy families of that era built their homes to project both comfort and power.

The site sits about half a mile south of Gullane and is accessible on foot via local walking routes through farmland. Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is uneven and the ruins offer no shelter or facilities, so plan your visit for clear weather if possible.

An ornate oak bed made in 1598 for Margaret Fawside and Patrick Levingstoun survives today at Biggar Museum, bearing their heraldry. This personal item from the castle's residents offers a rare glimpse into the household furnishings of that wealthy Scottish family.
