The Sheppey Crossing spans across The Swale with four traffic lanes, measuring 21.5 meters in width and rising 35 meters above the water.
The bridge was constructed in 2006 as part of a £100 million infrastructure project to enhance the A249 connection between the M2 motorway and Sheerness port.
The engineering design by Cass Hayward and Capita Symonds received recognition through the 2007 IStructE Award for Transportation Structures.
The crossing provides a direct route between mainland Kent and the Isle of Sheppey, handling substantial daily traffic flow and connecting to major motorways M20 and M2.
Construction teams faced technical challenges building piers on marshland, implementing a specialized jacking system to position roadway sections from both ends.
