Sherborne House, Dorset, Grade I listed country house in Newland, Sherborne, England.
Sherborne House is a three-story stone and brick mansion with seven bays and a slate roof located in Newland, Sherborne. Its north wing, dating from the 16th century, incorporates Palladian architectural elements that define its character.
Henry Seymour Portman commissioned the house in 1720 as a stopping point between his properties in Somerset and Dorset. The earlier 16th-century north section was incorporated into the later Baroque rebuild and redesign.
Inside the house, a grand staircase features an ornate mural painted by Sir James Thornhill with figures from Greek mythology. The artwork reflects the artistic craftsmanship that was central to grand residences of this period.
The house opened in Spring 2024 as The Sherborne and features exhibition spaces, a bistro, and restaurant facilities. Visitors can explore the building and enjoy various amenities throughout the different areas.
The property was acquired by the Sherborne House Trust in 2018 through a donation from Michael Cannon and transformed into a public arts venue. This rescue from decline has restored it as a vital cultural center for the community.
