Skipton Castle, Medieval castle in Skipton, England
Skipton Castle is a stone fortress positioned at the top of Skipton's High Street, with four corner towers rising above thick defensive walls. The central courtyard is enclosed by tall structures that contain the keep, residential quarters, storage rooms, and other functional spaces.
The fortress was founded in 1090 and endured a lengthy siege during the English Civil War from 1643 to 1645, when it demonstrated its defensive strength. Its ability to survive a widespread conflict preserved it as one of the few castles from that period to remain largely intact.
The castle displays how people once lived here through rooms like the Banqueting Hall and Kitchen, reflecting the daily life of a wealthy medieval family. You can observe how the spaces connected to one another and what activities took place in each room.
An information sheet helps visitors navigate using detailed drawings that explain all areas from underground chambers to the upper watchtower. Since many rooms connect via narrow staircases, visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for multiple levels.
The original kitchen with its massive fireplace reveals how the fortress sustained its inhabitants through water and food supplies, made possible by an ancient well. These supply systems were crucial in allowing the fortress to withstand extended sieges.
