Rye House Stadium, Racing stadium in Hoddesdon, England
Rye House Stadium was a racing venue in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, England, that hosted both greyhound racing and speedway motorcycle racing. It had an oval shale track for speedway and a separate circuit for the greyhound events.
The stadium opened in 1934 and was later used as a training base by the Wembley Lions speedway team after the Second World War. It closed for good in 2018, ending a run of more than eight decades of racing on the site.
The stadium was home to a local speedway team called the Rye House Rockets, who built a loyal following over several decades. Regular fans would return week after week to watch the same riders compete, giving the place a strong sense of local identity.
The site sits close to the River Lea Navigation and is reachable on foot from Hoddesdon town center. Since the venue closed permanently and most of the original structures are gone, a visit is only worthwhile for those with a specific interest in the history of the place.
The name of the site traces back to medieval buildings on the Isle of Rye, a small piece of land next to the original Rye House manor. That manor is best known as the location linked to the Rye House Plot of 1683, a failed plan to assassinate King Charles II of England.
