South Parade Pier, Victorian pier in Southsea, England
South Parade Pier is a Victorian structure in Southsea that extends into the Solent with a wide promenade featuring windscreens and railings. The pier is lined with arcade games, dining facilities, and designated fishing spots for visitors.
The pier was built in 1878 and opened in 1879 as a steamer terminal for passengers traveling to the Isle of Wight. It underwent major reconstruction in 1908 to update its facilities and structure.
The Gaiety Bar serves as a social gathering place where live music and dance events happen regularly throughout the year. These performances have become part of the local entertainment tradition that brings the community together.
The pier is open most days of the year with facilities including arcade games, food vendors, and fishing areas for public use. Plan your visit carefully as weather conditions can affect access, and some sections may close during rough seas or storms.
The pier was the setting for a major film production in 1974 where a fire during shooting forced the evacuation of approximately 400 people. Some of those present had to jump into the water to escape the flames.
