Sleddale Hall, Farmhouse near Shap, Cumbria, England
Sleddale Hall is a farmhouse located on the north side of Wet Sleddale valley in Cumbria, featuring traditional architectural details typical of Lake District farming buildings. The structure sits within a rural landscape defined by rolling slopes and open moorland.
The land belonged to nearby Shap Abbey during medieval times, when the monastery managed farmland across the region. Agricultural terraces from this monastic period remain visible on slopes northeast of the hall.
The farmhouse gained fame as a filming location for the British film 'Withnail and I', where it served as the backdrop for a key character's country retreat. Today it remains connected to this cinematic moment in people's minds.
The property is privately owned with no public access to the interior or grounds, though it is visible from footpaths that cross the surrounding countryside. Walking routes in the area offer natural viewpoints where the building can be seen from a distance.
Restoration work beginning in 2011 by Tim Ellis involved careful reconstruction of original details to preserve the building's character. The work balanced the film legacy with the practical needs of converting the space into a comfortable residence.
