St Catherine's Chapel, Lydiate, Medieval chapel in Lydiate, England
St Catherine's Chapel is a stone structure in Lydiate with surviving walls displaying Gothic window openings and a tower featuring late medieval architectural details. The building is protected as a scheduled monument and shows the typical construction style from around 1500.
The chapel was built by the Ireland family around 1500 as a private place of worship for this wealthy household. Religious use ended following the upheaval of the Dissolution in the mid 1500s, after which the structure gradually fell into decline.
The chapel is named after Saint Catherine and reflects the religious importance private chapels held for wealthy families of that era. Today the site remains valued by locals who gather there for community events within the historic stone walls.
The chapel is located next to the Scotch Piper Inn along the A5147 road and is easy to find. The site includes an old cemetery that was used until the late 1800s and parts of it remain visible today.
The roof vanished long ago, but the window and door openings remain visible and reveal clues about the original interior layout. These open spaces allow visitors to understand how the building was originally arranged and designed.
