St Cristiolus's Church, Llangristiolus

St Cristiolus's Church, Llangristiolus, Medieval church in Llangristiolus, United Kingdom.

Description

St Cristiolus's Church is a medieval church in Llangristiolus on the Welsh island of Anglesey. It features walls of gritstone and freestone with slate roofing, and a prominent east-facing window with five ogee-headed lights that draws the eye when entering the building.

History

The building originated in 1101 and underwent significant changes in the 13th century when the chancel was expanded and a new arch was installed. These medieval modifications shaped much of the structure that stands today.

Culture

The church serves both Welsh and English-speaking worshippers who gather here for services throughout the year. This bilingual practice reflects how the local community maintains its connection to both languages.

Practical

The church sits on raised ground overlooking Malltraeth Marsh and is located near the intersection of the A5 and A55 roads. The surrounding terrain is marshy, so sturdy footwear is advisable when exploring the area.

Did you know?

The churchyard contains six Commonwealth war graves from both World Wars, serving as a solemn memorial to fallen soldiers. Inside, a circular baptismal font displays intricate plaitwork patterns carved by hand, offering a glimpse of medieval craftsmanship.
