Small Heath, Residential district in Birmingham, England
Small Heath is a residential district in Birmingham, England, stretching along Coventry Road. Victorian terraced houses line the streets, interspersed with shops, workshops and small businesses.
Records from 1461 mention this place as a narrow strip of heath between two roads. The canal arrived in 1799, bringing industry and housing, and later factories grew along the waterway.
The local football club, originally called Small Heath Alliance, has kept its home in this part of the city for more than a century. Shops along the main road offer goods from many parts of the world, and on match days the streets around the stadium fill with people.
A railway station connects the district to the city center, and several bus routes run through the main road. Visitors on foot can explore the older parts of the neighborhood on their own.
During World War II, the local BSA factory manufactured every military rifle produced in Britain. This weapons production made the district an important industrial hub in wartime.
