St Martin's Church, Colchester

St Martin's Church is a Norman religious building in Colchester's Dutch Quarter constructed with flint walls and Roman brick. The chancel features a wagon roof with decorative timber carvings visible throughout.

The building dates back to the Norman period and was established as a church. Its tower suffered heavy damage during the English Civil War in 1648 and remained unrepaired afterward.

The church holds remnants of its medieval past, including faded wall paintings hidden beneath whitewash for centuries. Walking through its interior reveals layers of different periods left behind over time.

Access requires a key that can be obtained from the Colchester Borough Council museum service. It is best to arrange entry in advance before planning a visit.

The chancel roof displays intricate wooden construction with a Green Man carving at its peak. This wooden figure was rediscovered only in the 19th century during restoration work.
