Town Hall, Municipal building in central Colchester, England
The Town Hall is a classical building in central Colchester featuring a symmetrical facade with seven bays, Doric pilasters, and a 192-foot (58-meter) tower. The tower is decorated with allegorical figures and topped with a bronze statue.
The building was constructed in 1902 following earlier structures from 1277 and 1845, designed by architect John Belcher in the Edwardian Baroque style. It was built to serve as the city council headquarters and continues in that role.
The main halls serve as gathering spaces for local ceremonies and community events that shape the city's social life. These rooms reflect how residents mark important moments and celebrate their shared identity throughout the year.
The building sits in the town center and is easily accessible on foot with clear signage from the main streets. Visitor access to interior spaces may vary depending on scheduled events or official council business.
The tower contains a clock named Charlie after sponsor Charles Hawkins, powered by five bells. One of these bells is preserved from the original medieval meeting hall that previously stood on the site.
