St Lawrence's Church, Broughton, Gothic church in Broughton, England
St Lawrence's Church is an English Gothic church constructed of stone with lead roofs in Broughton. The building features a nave without aisles, a south porch, a chancel, and a three-stage west tower with diagonal buttresses.
The church was built in the 14th century and underwent major restoration in 1849 when hidden wall paintings were discovered beneath layers of plaster. This work revealed important medieval artwork that had been concealed for centuries.
The interior walls display medieval wall paintings from the 1400s, including scenes of Saint George fighting the dragon and a rare illustration warning against swearing. These images offer insight into the religious beliefs and daily concerns of that era.
Access to the building can be arranged by contacting Raymond Tetlow at 01908 675074. The church is located in Broughton Village, Milton Keynes, MK10 9AA and is easy to find.
The church holds four historic bells cast between 1470 and 1655 by different bell makers. These bells come from accomplished craftsmen like William Chamberlain, James Keene, and Anthony Chandler and represent a rare example of how bell-making evolved over generations.
