St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate is a Gothic stone church positioned directly above one of Winchester's medieval city gates. The building displays Gothic architectural features and preserves fragments of original stained glass windows that remain visible today.
The church is first recorded in 1264 and suffered fire damage during conflicts between Winchester citizens and the Cathedral. These damages prompted extensive rebuilding work that shaped the building's present form.
The church serves as a place for Anglican worship while maintaining its medieval character through centuries of continuous use. Its small capacity of around 70 seats creates an intimate setting for the local congregation that gathers here regularly.
Access to the church requires climbing stairs from street level. Visitors should check opening hours in advance, as the building is only open at set times during the week.
