Kingsgate, Medieval city gate in Winchester, England.
Kingsgate is a two-story stone structure in Winchester with a central archway for passage. The gate features both its original medieval elements and modifications made over the centuries.
The gate was first documented in 1148 and stands where a Roman entrance once existed. It served as a key access point to the royal residence and Cathedral Close throughout the Middle Ages.
The Church of St. Swithun-upon-Kingsgate sits directly above the gate passage and remains active today. This location gained literary recognition when Anthony Trollope featured it in his writing.
The structure sits on one of the main routes through the historic center and is easily reached on foot. The passage is open to walk through at any time and provides a clear sense of the medieval fortification.
Kingsgate is one of only two surviving medieval gates in Winchester and uniquely combines pedestrian traffic with active religious space. The church within continues to function as a place of worship housed within this ancient fortification.
