St Mary's Church, Hendon, Grade II* listed church building in Hendon, United Kingdom
St Mary's Church is a medieval church in Hendon featuring English Gothic architecture with Norman elements visible on its north wall. The structure includes arched doorways and original windows that reflect its long history and architectural evolution.
The church was established around 1080 by Benedictine monks from St Albans Abbey, making it one of the area's oldest structures. A neo-Norman brick tower was added in 1828, significantly altering the building's visual character and skyline presence.
The interior displays numerous funeral hatchments and memorials that reflect the area's social history and the importance of remembrance to the community. A notable monument to John Sharpe features a large urn beneath an arched baldacchino, exemplifying the craftsmanship and care invested in honoring the deceased.
The church offers both step and ramp access, accommodating different mobility needs for visitors. Bicycle parking is available on site, and public transportation stops are located just a short walk away, making the visit easy to arrange.
An organ chamber was added to the north side in 1880, expanding the church's musical capabilities and acoustic space. Several ornate obelisks dedicated to the Grove family, decorated with putto heads, occupy the interior as enduring markers of the area's prominent families.
