Steeple Grange Light Railway, Heritage railway in Derbyshire Dales, England.
Steeple Grange Light Railway is a narrow-gauge railway in Derbyshire that runs through limestone cuttings and displays historic locomotives and rolling stock from former mines and quarries. The line extends roughly 1 kilometer from Steeplehouse Station to Middleton, connecting two small stops along this short but genuine stretch of track.
The railway operates on the former trackbed of the Killer's Branch, part of the Cromford and High Peak Railway that served the region's mines and quarries until 1967. After this line closed, volunteers later restored and converted it into a heritage attraction open to visitors.
The railway tells the story of mining work through restored vehicles that once operated underground. Visitors can see how workers depended on these machines in their daily labor.
Visitors can take a round-trip train journey from Steeplehouse Station to Middleton lasting about 25 minutes, with volunteers sharing information about railway operations along the way. The route is short and easy to walk, making it accessible for families with children and less mobile visitors.
The collection features rare locomotives including ZM32 Horwich, the last of its type purchased by British Railways, and Greenbat, a restored battery-powered locomotive. These special machines represent different technologies that powered mining operations over the decades.
