Staircase House, Historic house museum in Stockport, England.
Staircase House is a medieval townhouse with multiple floors showing everyday life from the 15th century through to the 1940s. Each room is furnished and fitted out to convey how people lived during different periods.
Dendrochronology confirms the oldest surviving timbers date to 1459-1460, establishing when the building was first constructed. Later alterations, especially the staircase added in the 1600s, show how the house evolved over time.
The house shows how craftspeople and merchants lived and worked in Stockport. The displays tell of the trading networks that shaped the town and the workers who ran their trades from these rooms.
The building is open on several days each week and can be explored at your own pace or with a guide. Plan enough time to visit the multiple floors and be prepared for uneven floors typical of older buildings.
The staircase is an original Jacobean construction from 1618 featuring a rare spiral newel design. Few such intricately crafted staircases remain in England today.
