Sugarwell Court, University dormitory in Meanwood, Leeds, England
Sugarwell Court is a student residence in Meanwood, Leeds, comprising seven residential blocks named after Yorkshire dales arranged alphabetically around the grounds. Each block offers en-suite rooms along with shared facilities including laundry services, bike storage, WiFi, and communal study and social spaces.
The site began as Sugarwell Works tannery in 1866, where hides were processed using the local water supply. The industrial structure was repurposed as student housing in 1993 while preserving its original sandstone and slate construction.
The residence connects students to both urban life and nature, positioned near Meanwood's parks while maintaining access to Leeds city center.
The residence is accessed via clear entrances from Meanwood Road, with adequate parking and bike facilities on site. The flat layout makes all seven blocks easy to navigate on foot, and the location offers quick connections to Leeds city center by bus or bike.
The gates, railings, and gate piers are separately listed as Grade II structures, receiving their own heritage recognition beyond the main building. This distinction reflects how the entrance features themselves are valued as important architectural elements.
