Sulham and Tidmarsh Woods and Meadows, Nature reserve and protected woodland in Reading West, England
Sulham and Tidmarsh Woods and Meadows is a nature reserve west of Reading containing five distinct woodland blocks separated by meadows and grassland. The site stretches along the River Pang and combines ancient woodlands with wet grassland areas that create varied habitats.
The landscape was shaped in ancient times by the River Pang's flooding, which created layers of alluvial soil and gravel deposits. The woodland structure developed over centuries through traditional coppicing and the site received protected status in 1986.
The area received Site of Special Scientific Interest designation in 1986, managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust for conservation.
The eastern side has multiple footpaths that make access straightforward, while the western section has limited tracks through the valley. Spring and summer offer the best conditions for walking and spotting wildlife, though the ground can be wet in winter months.
The site harbors over 300 moth species, many concentrated in the older woodland sections. This rich diversity is supported by the dense understorey and seasonal flooding that creates ideal breeding grounds for these nocturnal insects.
