The Transport Museum, Wythall

The Transport Museum, Wythall, Transport museum in Wythall, United Kingdom.

Description

The Transport Museum in Wythall is a privately-run facility housing more than 90 buses from regional operators, including distinctive Midland Red and WMPTE vehicles in their original colors from Birmingham and surrounding areas. The collection also features a significant number of battery-powered commercial vehicles from earlier decades.

History

The facility opened in 1978 as a conservation effort for transport vehicles and their heritage across the West Midlands region. Over the years it has accumulated buses and other vehicles that document changes in how people moved around the area.

Culture

The museum tells the story of public transportation's role in shaping the region through its collection of vehicles from different operators and eras. Visitors can observe how bus design and service patterns reflected the needs and habits of local communities over time.

Practical

The facility opens from March through October on weekends and bank holidays, with midweek access on Wednesdays during school breaks. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the collection is spread across an expansive outdoor site.

Did you know?

The collection holds the region's largest assortment of battery-powered electric vehicles, including around 30 electric milk floats and delivery vans from various operators. These vehicles represent a nearly forgotten chapter of transport history from when electric power was common for local goods delivery.
