St Mary's Church, Wythall

St Mary's Church, Wythall, Grade II listed religious building in Wythall, England.

Description

St Mary's Church in Wythall is a Grade II listed Victorian structure featuring a prominent tower added in 1908 with detailed stonework throughout. The building displays architectural characteristics typical of the period in which it was constructed.

History

Frederick Preedy designed the original church in 1862, and William Bidlake added the tower in 1908 as a memorial gift from the Mynors family. The building ceased functioning as a place of worship in 1986 and was subsequently converted to other uses.

Culture

The churchyard holds eight Commonwealth war graves from World War II, serving as a quiet memorial to fallen service members. These graves form a focal point where visitors pause to remember those who died in the conflict.

Practical

The building is now privately owned and used as a commercial headquarters, so viewing is best done from outside the property. The church and its grounds remain visible from the surrounding streets and worth observing for their architectural details.

Did you know?

The church organ was built by Nicholson and Co in 1908 and remains recorded in the National Pipe Organ Register. This instrument represents a fine example of British organ craftsmanship that many visitors overlook when viewing the building.
