The Lanes

The Lanes is a shopping district in central Brighton formed by several narrow pedestrian alleys that create a network of walkways lined with independent boutiques, antique dealers, jewelry stores, and specialty shops. The area spreads across the blocks between East Street, Ship Street, and North Street, offering a varied selection of retail experiences and local commerce.

The district originated from the 16th-century layout of Brighthelmstone, a small fishing settlement that later expanded into the modern seaside town of Brighton. Its narrow alley configuration preserves this early urban structure and shows how the town transformed over the centuries.

Local artists display their work in numerous galleries scattered throughout the area, and independent record shops offer extensive vinyl collections for music enthusiasts. These small businesses reflect the creative character of the city and attract visitors seeking handmade and original products.

The area is located roughly ten minutes on foot from Brighton Station and about five minutes from Brighton Palace Pier, making it easily accessible. The best way to explore it is to wander through the alleys at your own pace, as many small shops are tucked away and require time to discover.

Hannington's Lane, which opened in 2019, features a vertical garden wall and art murals within a restored historic department store location. This revitalized space blends greenery with classic architecture and provides a newer entry point to the district from Ship Street.
