Stone Cross Windmill, Grade II* listed tower mill in Stone Cross, England
Stone Cross Windmill is a four-story red brick tower mill in Westham featuring a white rotating cap and four wind-catching sails. The structure contains traditional milling machinery that continues to grind grain into flour using wind power.
Stephen Neve built this mill in 1876 using machinery from Phoenix Iron Foundry and operated it for grain milling until 1937. The structure then served as a World War II observation post overlooking the East Sussex countryside.
The mill remains a working symbol of local grain production, where visitors can watch traditional stone-grinding techniques in action. The site reflects how rural communities once relied on wind power for daily food processing.
The mill welcomes visitors on Sunday afternoons during summer months, where freshly milled flour is available to purchase on-site. Plan for a rural location with limited parking and allow time to explore both the exterior and working interior.
The mill still contains original 19th century machinery from Phoenix Iron Foundry, which is rarely seen in working condition elsewhere in the region. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship and engineering details typical of that industrial period.
