Tramway, Arts center in Pollokshields, Scotland
Tramway is an arts centre in Glasgow, housed in a former tram depot that now contains two performance spaces, two galleries, and dance studios. The building is a category B listed structure, used for both exhibitions and live events.
The building was constructed in 1894 as a tram depot and later served as Glasgow's transport museum from 1964 to 1987. After that, it was converted into an arts venue, shifting from its original industrial use to its current purpose.
The venue hosts emerging and established artists who present contemporary work across performance and visual arts. You will notice a focus on work that challenges ideas and engages with current social themes throughout the program.
Admission to the gallery spaces is free, and the centre is open Wednesday to Sunday. Since exhibitions and events change regularly, checking the current programme before visiting helps to make the most of a trip.
The rear section of the building houses Scottish Ballet's studios, which moved here in 2003 following a community campaign. Having a major national dance company and a contemporary arts venue share the same building on a daily basis is something rarely seen elsewhere.
