The Luminaire operated as a live music performance space above McGovern's Pub, featuring an intimate concert room for independent artists and bands.
The establishment opened its doors on March 1, 2005, under the leadership of John Donnelly and Andy Inglis, taking over a former nightclub space.
Time Out Magazine recognized The Luminaire as London Venue of The Year in 2006, followed by Music Week's UK Venue of The Year award in 2007.
The venue hosted regular concerts until March 9, 2011, when financial challenges led to its permanent closure and subsequent conversion into student housing.
The founders named the venue after a New York City bar called Lit, located in the Lower East Side neighborhood.
