Uppark, House museum in Harting, England.
Uppark is a 17th-century country house in southern England featuring rooms decorated in Georgian style with ornate plasterwork and period furnishings. The building sits within expansive grounds that stretch across the landscape, offering views over rolling countryside.
The house was built in 1690 and underwent major renovation in the mid-1700s that established its current character. A devastating fire in 1989 caused serious damage, but careful restoration work completed in 1995 returned it to its former state.
The house holds a connection to writer H.G. Wells, whose mother worked here as housekeeper and influenced his creative work. Walking through the rooms today, you can sense the domestic life that shaped both the family and the literary world he would later create.
Visitors can join guided tours to explore the preserved rooms and examine architectural features from different periods. Plan your visit for dry weather if you want to make the most of the gardens and outdoor areas as well.
After a major fire in 1989 damaged much of the building, craftspeople used historical techniques to rebuild sections of it, turning the restoration into a remarkable example of traditional craftsmanship. This work shows how old skills were kept alive to bring back what had been lost.
