Upper Ditchford, Medieval settlement ruins in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom

Upper Ditchford is a medieval settlement site located west of the Fosse Way between Moreton-in-Marsh and Stretton on Fosse. The remains appear as earthworks and ground features that trace the outlines of former village structures across the landscape.

The settlement was abandoned in the late 15th century, with a priest named John Rous documenting its ruined state in 1491. This reflected the broader pattern of village desertion that occurred across medieval England during that period.

The earthworks reveal the layout of homes and farmsteads that once housed a community of rural farmers. You can still see the traces of these structures scattered across the fields today.

The site is best explored on foot to observe the ground patterns as they rise and fall across the grassland. Visiting during drier weather helps reveal the subtle earth features more clearly.

This site forms one of three deserted settlements in the area, joined by Middle Ditchford and Lower Ditchford nearby. The three neighbors reveal how individual villages in the region took different paths, with some eventually becoming isolated farmsteads.
