Old Wardour Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Wiltshire, England.
Old Wardour Castle is a medieval ruin with a hexagonal floor plan and central courtyard, built from green sandstone quarried locally in the area. The site also includes landscaped gardens and a lakeside pavilion from the 18th century that still hosts events.
The castle was founded in 1392 by Baron Lovell with permission from King Richard II as a show of power and status. It suffered severe damage during a siege in 1643 during the English Civil War and gradually fell into ruin afterward.
The ruins have served as a backdrop for films and music projects over the decades, giving the place a role in popular culture beyond its historical significance. Visitors walking through can sense this modern connection alongside the ancient stones.
The site is open to visitors with audio guides and information materials available to help you explore the ruins at your own pace. Wear sturdy footwear as the ground is uneven and can be muddy, especially after rain.
A grotto was built in the 18th century using stones salvaged from the castle's original ruins, turning pieces of the past into a romantic garden feature. The grounds also display a stone circle that was moved here from elsewhere.
