Water of Leith Walkway, Public walkway and bike path between Balerno and Leith, Scotland.
The Water of Leith Walkway is a walking and cycling path that extends across several kilometers through Edinburgh, connecting different neighborhoods together. The route follows the riverbank and offers level, well-maintained sections throughout for both pedestrians and cyclists.
Construction of this path began in 1973, with the first section opening to pedestrians that same year. Over the following decades, the route was gradually extended and improved.
The Colinton Tunnel displays a large mural drawing from Robert Louis Stevenson's verse, while statues by Anthony Gormley mark different sections along the path.
The path runs mostly flat and suits different fitness levels, though some sections are steeper than others. Sturdy shoes are recommended, and it is wise to dress for the weather, as the path remains open in rain.
The path is a protected habitat for wildlife, where herons, kingfishers, otters, and trout can be spotted. This natural richness lets visitors experience urban nature up close.
