Penielheugh Monument, Military memorial tower on Penielheugh summit, Scottish Borders, United Kingdom

The Waterloo Monument rises 150 feet as a stone Doric column on the highest point of Penielheugh, offering views across the Scottish countryside.

William Kerr, the 6th Marquis of Lothian, commissioned the monument in 1815 to commemorate the British victory at the Battle of Waterloo.

The monument stands as a testament to Scottish architecture, incorporating local stone and traditional building techniques in its grand Doric design.

Visitors need to obtain a key from the local office during weekday hours to access the interior staircase and viewing platform.

The current structure replaced an earlier pyramid-shaped monument that collapsed in 1816, leading to architect Archibald Elliot creating this more enduring design.
