White Mill, Sandwich

The White Mill is a three-story grinding mill built on a brick base with four spring sails and traditional wooden machinery for milling grain. The building has been preserved so visitors can understand the technical details and how the milling operation worked.

The mill was built in 1760 and initially ran on wind power before switching to an oil engine in 1926. Operations ended in 1957 when the facility closed permanently.

The miller's cottage inside is furnished to show how people lived and worked between 1900 and 1939, with tools and equipment from that period on display.

The mill opens on specific days for visitors with guided tours available through the interior. It is wise to check opening days in advance and allow time to explore the exhibits at a comfortable pace.

The top roof section of the mill, known as the cap, was completely rebuilt after it detached in 2018. This extensive restoration work shows how much care goes into maintaining the building today.
