Whiteleys, Grade II listed retail structure in City of Westminster, United Kingdom
Whiteleys is a Grade II listed structure in Westminster whose facade displays ornamental balconies, arched details, and tall glass fronts across several stories. The symmetrical design and Art Nouveau decorative elements run along the street-facing elevations.
William Whiteley founded a shop here in the 1860s that later grew into one of London's first department stores. The current facade was built in the early 20th century after a fire destroyed much of the earlier structure.
The name honors William Whiteley, who opened a drapery shop here in the 1860s and gradually turned it into a vast retail operation. Visitors today can still see the curved entrances and wide shop fronts that once drew wealthy shoppers from across the city.
The main entrance faces a busy street and is a short walk from several Underground stations. Visitors will find lifts and stairs that connect all floors with shops, cafes, and restaurants.
The Grade II listing protects the facade, but allows the interior to be completely redesigned. This means modern shops can be installed behind the historic walls without changing the street view.
