Woburn Safari Park, Safari park in Woburn, Bedfordshire, England
Woburn Safari Park is a wildlife park near Woburn in Bedfordshire, England, with enclosures for rhinos, elephants, tigers, black bears and other animals from several continents. The park divides into different zones, some accessible by car and others on foot with animal encounters and facilities for smaller residents.
The Duke of Bedford opened the park in 1970 alongside circus entrepreneur Jimmy Chipperfield to generate income for the upkeep of the nearby estate. Since then, the site has grown from a small collection to its current size with hundreds of animals and several themed areas.
The park maintains membership in the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums while participating in international breeding programs for endangered species.
Visitors drive their own car through the safari zones, while pedestrians and cyclists are not allowed there for safety reasons. In the walkable sections, people can leave their vehicle and move around enclosures, playgrounds and restaurants on foot.
A small train runs through selected sections offering commentary about the animals visible along the route. Some enclosures sit close to the track, allowing observation from the carriages as the train moves slowly past them.
