Woodbury Castle, Iron Age hillfort in Woodbury, England.
Woodbury Castle is an Iron Age hillfort located on Woodbury Common in England. The site consists of extensive earth mounds and ditches positioned at about 185 meters elevation, offering views across the Exe Estuary and Lyme Bay.
The site was built in the first millennium BC as a defensive structure for Iron Age communities. It later may have served as a point controlling ancient trade routes connected to the Roman settlement of Exeter.
The site reveals traces of wooden buildings that once stood here during the Iron Age. These remains help show how people in Devon organized their settlements and built their homes.
Access is available through the East Devon Way hiking trail, with free parking at the Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust car park. The terrain is walkable in appropriate footwear and the elevated position provides far-reaching views.
The raised position of this fortification allowed control over ancient trade routes linked to Exeter. Visitors often overlook how crucial this location was for commerce and communication in prehistoric times.
