Woodbury Common

Woodbury Common is an open heathland area in East Devon with patches of gorse, heather, and grassland that support numerous bird and insect species. Multiple walking trails and parking areas allow exploration of different sections, with designated spaces available for mountain biking and orienteering.

The site contains an Iron Age hill fort called Woodbury Castle, showing evidence of ancient settlement and defensive structures in the region. In 1549, a battle occurred here during the Prayer Book Rebellion when royal forces faced rebels from Cornwall and Devon.

The common functions as a training ground for the Royal Marines stationed nearby, with military exercises running alongside public recreational use. This shared arrangement shapes how visitors experience the landscape and the rhythms of activity throughout the day.

The site has good access with parking at multiple entry points and walking routes suitable for different skill levels. Visitors should be prepared for changing weather conditions and some areas may be restricted during military training exercises.

The landscape supports rare insect and bird species that are particularly visible to observers during migration seasons. The mix of open heathland and denser patches creates the conditions that allow these populations to thrive.
