Woodbury Common, Natural heathland in Devon, England
The East Devon site spans across open heathland with patches of gorse, heather, and grassland, providing habitats for numerous species of birds and insects.
Dating back to the Iron Age, Woodbury Castle hill fort stands within the common, offering evidence of ancient settlements and defensive structures in the region.
The common serves as a training ground for the Royal Marines from the nearby Lympstone Commando Training Centre, integrating military exercises with public recreation.
Multiple walking trails and parking areas allow visitors to explore different sections of the common, with designated spaces for mountain biking and orienteering activities.
The site witnessed the Battle of Woodbury Common during the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549, where forces loyal to the crown confronted rebels from Cornwall and Devon.
