Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre, Military aviation museum in Montrose, Scotland
The Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre is an aviation and military museum in Montrose, Angus, Scotland, occupying the grounds of one of Britain's earliest military airfields. It holds original aircraft, flight equipment, and machinery displayed across indoor exhibition areas and outdoor sections.
The airfield opened in 1913 as Britain's first operational military air station and remained active through both World Wars. It closed in 1952 after nearly four decades of continuous military use.
The site sits on the original airfield, and the hangars still feel like working spaces rather than museum halls. Visitors often find it easy to imagine daily life on an early military airbase because so little of the structure has changed.
Allow around two hours to go through the indoor displays and outdoor areas at a relaxed pace. Wear sturdy shoes, as parts of the outdoor sections can be uneven, particularly after rain.
Three hangars from 1913 still stand on the grounds, making them among the oldest surviving aircraft shelters anywhere in the world. Their plain construction shows how basic the infrastructure of early military aviation really was.
